Stayed with a friend, who fortified us with support and snacks, namely gummies and jerky. Served at The Living Room Cafe (part of the Inspiration Corporation), a community brunch during which the clients sit down and the volunteers take their order. Joined by parents of Quincy University students – heard about their 50 state volunteering program. The sun was shining despite the biting cold, glinting throw the windows at perfect angles to cast a warm glow over the tables, and just for a moment, I forgot these people were homeless and hungry, or working and hungry, not making enough in wages to buy food. For a split second, I forgot I was in a soup kitchen, I forgot I was taking orders from people who weren't paying for their meals because they couldn't afford what was on the plate in front of them. In that moment, I was in a cafe, people chatting, silverware clinking, cups clacking, and everyone was well provided for and full. Toured the city, taking pictures of the river and the “bean”. Ate deep dish pizza (Tim’s first Chicago pizza) and met college friends for coffee.
