Day 38 - New Mexico - Talking Talons

Talking Talons is a youth leadership program that brings birds of prey, reptiles, and bats into classrooms (often high risk classrooms) to teach students eco-awareness. Not only do they show students the magnificence of these animals up close, but they help these students to develop confidence with public speaking by assigning an animal to each individual and having them present a report to the class. We went to program with two educators and a Harris hawk that had been injured and was non-releasable. The class participated in an activity regarding species extinction due to habitat destruction before settling back into their chairs to meet and hear about the bird. When the school day ended, Tim and I did a shift at the thrift store that helps to support Talking Talon’s operations, sorting and hanging clothes. We accompanied the educators and 5 animals to the local REI where a cub scout troop and assorted adults who “oohed” and “ahhed” when they got to touch and hold snakes and view a Redtail hawk.
