Day 35 - Kansas - Sedgwick County Zoo

You know you can volunteer at a ZOO? Like, with animals!!! No, really. You can!

In Wichita, Tim and I volunteered at the Sedgwick County Zoo. We worked with the “bird folk”, prepping meals for the various birds in the jungle habitat. Chopping fruits and vegetables, grinding lettuce, distributing other food items (meal worms, fish, rats, mice, and chicks) between serving dishes, dependant on intended diner. We walked through the jungle, swopping out picked over remnants for fresh portions. We cleaned, watered and skewered pieces of fruit on to branches. We heard the animals identified by species and by name. After our shift had ended, one of our lovely hosts gave us the tour of the zoo, complete with chance to feed an elephant and pet a rhino.
