Day 34 - Nebraska - Academy of Rock

“These kids are really good….they ROCK,” Tim said to me, incredulously. We stood in one of the multiple practice spaces that had been constructed in the basement of a local music shop, staring wide eyed at the 11 year olds tearing it up on their guitars, basses, and drums. In Lincoln, Nebraska, we worked with Northeast Family Center, but more specifically, for the Academy of Rock program. In the morning, we observed the “beginner” classes, which sounded anything but beginner to us, each group of students practicing 2 or 3 songs they are currently learning. Later in the day, we “supervised” Doppelganger, a group comprised of 10 to 12 year olds, who are not only rockstars on their instruments, but write their own music. As an added education, the guys taught us how to play one of their songs. Well, the simplified version at least.
